Officers in our department serve as mentors after school and during the
summer months at our Avery Street Recreational Center. By spending
time with youth in this informal setting, they are better able to build
lasting relationships and break down barriers. This pays dividends
when these youth are at a crossroads in life and are more willing to seek
help from positive role models such as our police officers.
Other officers
volunteer in two programs in area schools. Communities in Schools
(CIS) pairs adult mentors with high school students for tutoring and
discussion. Schools and Communities Organized to Read (SCOR) pairs
adults mentors with second grade students for tutoring in reading skills.
We are proud of the commitment our officers have in their community.
