WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR FAMILY AND THE PREVENTION OF CRIME AGAINST YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?

 The ‘crime equation’

A criminal must have THREE (3) elements present before he/she will attempt to commit a crime and succeed without being caught:

  1. Desire

  2. Skill/Ability

  3. Opportunity

The criminal's desire, skill and/or ability are something to which he/she will have control.  To decrease the chance of becoming a victim, you must take away the criminal's opportunity to succeed without being caught.  How is this accomplished?  Easy, remove the factors to which you have control.  It’s simple math, let’s take a look.  Every crime has three factors that are added together . . . Suspect + Victim + Opportunity = Crime.

Suspect    Victim     Opportunity
(Desire, Skill/Ability)   +  (Easy Target)   +  (Right Location)   =  CRIME

Being that the suspect controls the desire, skill and/or ability we recognize that as a ‘given.’  The variables that come into effect are whether or not the suspect sees the victim as an “Easy Target” in the right location, allowing for the opportunity.

Opportunity –     A favorable combination of circumstances, time and location.

Knowing that we must not give the criminal the opportunity to commit crime, allows us to use practical, common sense methods of diminishing the opportunity for a crime to be committed and reducing the risks of becoming a victim.  Let’s “Stack the Deck Against Crime.”
