Before joining the Garner Police Department in January 1999, Sergeant Mike McIver served with the Clayton Police Department from 1997-1999. During his tenure with GPD, Sergeant McIver has been a Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer and DARE Instructor. Before his promotion to Sergeant in the summer of 2004, Mike served on the Department's Traffic Safety Unit.

Sergeant McIver was born and raised in Garner. He attended Garner Senior High School and earned his BS in Criminal Justice from Mount Olive College. While attending College, he was named to the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society. 

Mike earned his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the NC Department of Justice and retains a Law Enforcement Instructor Certification from NCDOJ. He has also been the Police Department's Special Olympics fund raising coordinator for several years. 

Sergeant McIver served on the Garner Baseball Board of Directors (2002-2004) and on the Garner EMS Board of Directors from 1996-2002. 

Mike enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.
