The Garner Police Department, a nationally accredited agency,  currently has 63 sworn positions and 68 total personnel.  The Department is headed by a Chief of Police, Brandon V. Zuidema.  A Deputy Chief supervises all police operations, including a patrol division consisting of 40 sworn officers: two Lieutenants, eight Sergeants, and 30 officers.  A Lieutenant supervises five traffic safety officers.  A Lieutenant supervises the Investigations division, consisting of 8 criminal investigators, including two who specialize in drugs, one special victims investigator, and a gang-related crimes investigator.  An Administrative Lieutenant supervises an Administrative Sergeant who provides personnel development and supervises Community Services, consisting of four School Resource Officers, one Crime Prevention Officer, and one Animal Control Officer.  On the civilian side, an Administrative Manager supervises three records clerks.

The Patrol division is divided into four teams who work twelve hour shifts.  Each team staffs the town's two geographic districts for four consecutive days, then has four days off.  The department maintains a police substation in each of the districts for use by officers and the community as well.

The Community Services division staffs a School Resource Officer at each of our two middle schools (North Garner and East Garner Middle Schools) and two at our high school (Garner Senior High).  The Crime Prevention Officer works with community groups, patrol officers, and others to develop instructional material, seminars, visits, and programs to reduce crime and maintain community relations.
